Fueling the body, engaging the mind, nurturing the spirit, and making new connections. Whole-person wellness is so much more than a person’s physical and mental health. It’s a dynamic process fueled by change and growth — a lifelong personal journey to better one's self. It is clear that enhancing overall health through wellness is essential for maintaining or gaining independence.
Watermark’s 360Well
® is our holistic approach to health, rooted in four key “circles” of wellness: mind, body, spirit, and community. While each serves an important role on its own, the circles are interconnected, creating a comprehensive strategy to overall well-being that enhances the quality of life for our residents.
Watermark residents are in the driver’s seat when it comes to mapping their individual 360Well path. They can engage in a series of activities based on their needs and the areas of wellness they wish to develop. Achieving their goals independently or with a
360Well Coordinator serving as a guide is the resident’s choice. To support their journey, residents have full access to programming aligned with the 360Well circles, including personal training to support physical well-being, and programs designed to build connections and community. In addition, Watermark is implementing on-site medical services.
According to 2020 statistics, the United States spent $4.12 trillion, or approximately $10,328 per person, on health care expenditures, which is 19.7% of U.S. gross domestic product. Seniors frequently rely on high-cost health care services such as emergency rooms, acute hospitals, and post-acute care — highlighting the opportunity for value-based care organizations to partner with senior housing and skilled nursing operators.
Ultimately, wellness will contribute to decreased costs and the utilization of the costly medical services.
By taking a proactive approach to resident health and whole-person wellness, Watermark communities have seen a 30% reduction in falls, a 43% reduction in hospital visits, and a 43% reduction in the prescribing of unnecessary medications.
Our partnerships ensure all of the elements work together, from primary care and pharmacy to therapy and electronic health records. For example, as part of the PointClickCare partnership team, Watermark collaborates on innovations in senior living electronic health records. We gain early access to their tools and have contributed valuable insights, most recently in the Pharmacy Connect pilot. This integrated medication management tool reduces onboarding and training efforts, streamlines medication order management, and enhances resident safety in our communities.
“I've had the privilege of collaborating with Watermark Retirement Communities through PointClickCare for the past five years, and their commitment to innovation and excellence never fails to impress me,” said Murry Mercier, Senior Living Market Director at PointClickCare.
Michael Emery, Executive Vice President of Senior Living at Curana Health, added: “Watermark’s leadership and operational teams are truly one of those best-in-class operators. Their 360Well program is not only visionary, but a practical approach to improve healthcare outcomes. Getting key healthcare influencers to the table can be a challenge, but Watermark has upped the ante by making it a requirement.”
Value-based care is a long game, not a short game. Senior living operators who have a short-game mentality will not find success in the value-based care arena. At Watermark, we consider value-based care a holistic lifestyle, not a product. A successful foundation that actively engages residents from their initial move-in through their tenure is crucial for long-term success.
