Senior living communities are unique in many ways, which makes preparing for critical incidents, including an active shooter event, all the more important. In the midst of a critical incident in an apartment building, an office, or a public location, individuals typically bear the responsibility for their own safety. Each person can concentrate on reaching a secure location, and ensuring their personal well-being.

In senior living, our associates not only have the responsibility to safeguard themselves, but are also entrusted with ensuring the safety of those under our care. During an active shooter event, senior living residents are particularly vulnerable and may struggle to independently ensure their safety. Given that many residents rely on our associates both physically and mentally, they may be unable to navigate to safety without the clear guidance and assistance of associates. Moving residents into more secure locations or out of the building is made more difficult by mobility issues, the inability of many residents to understand and follow directions, and the size and layout of the building. In addition, in senior living, unlike an apartment building, many residents leave their doors open or unlocked. This makes securing the building more difficult and leaves residents more vulnerable.

Therefore, it is imperative that our associates are trained and have a clear understanding of their roles during an active shooter event. Training for critical incidents and active shooter situations is an integral component of the initial orientation for all associates at Watermark Retirement Communities and is mandated annually thereafter. In addition to this training, Watermark has developed an active shooter event preparation tool and a rapid response guide to aid communities in preparing for such situations. Communities routinely review and revise the active shooter tool at least annually. Watermark is also committed to protecting residents in the event of potential violence, including instituting lock-down procedures and hiring additional security until the threat has passed.

Watermark is committed to the utmost safety and security of our residents and associates. We recognize the unique challenges that senior living communities face in preparing for critical incidents. Our associate readiness training is specific to these challenges and ensures our teams understand their roles and the tools available to keep our communities safe.
